The present cross-sectional research examined a process underlying the positive association between holding an extended future time perspective (FTP) and self-regulated learning through the lens of self-determination theory. High school students and university students (N=324) participated in the study. It was found that students with an extended FTP regulated their study behaviour on the basis of several internal motives, including feelings of guilt and shame (introjected regulation), personal conviction (identified regulation) and interest (intrinsic motivation). Moreover, introjected and identified regulation emerged as mediators accounting for the association between FTP and cognitive processing. In contrast to FTP, a present fatalistic and present hedonic time-orientation yielded more negative motivational and learning correlates. The link between FTP and self-determination theory is discussed. The results show that:(1)The future time perspective and the self-regulated learning have close relationship with each other, and have the function of predetermination.(2)Hedonism does not have the direct influence on self-regulated learning, and there is no causal relationship.(3)The future time perspective has the positive correlation with identified adjust. The previous has the forecast on the later one.(4)The future time perspective has the relationship with inner adjust.(5)The future time perspective does not have the relationship with inner motivation.(6)Identified adjust and inner adjust are the mediating variable of self-regulated learning...
