The exercises in the Chinese textbooks is an important part of them,and they are useful tools for students to learn Chinese.Only through practice can students develop linguistic skills with the help of linguistic knowledge.How good the exercises are not only affects the quality of Chinese textbooks,but also influences teaching.There are a large number of Chinese language learners in Indonesia.In order to understand the quality of exercises in elementary Indonesian Chinese textbooks,this thesis has chosen three kinds of Chinese textbooks that are widely used in Indonesia: Happy Chinese,HSK Standard Course,and Easy Steps to Chinese.A comparative analysis of the exercises in them has been conducted to evaluate the their quality and to make specific suggestions,which aims to provide reference for the editing and use of exercises in elementary Indonesian Chinese textbooks.This thesis comprehensively employs the methods of literature review,data statistics,comparative analysis and questionnaire survey.The first chapter makes a summary of various literature on the exercises in elementary Indonesian Chinese textbook,thus forming a research review;the second chapter compares and analyzes the number and types of the exercises in three Chinese textbooks;the third chapter makes a comparison and analysis of the exercises in the three Chinese textbooks from four aspects: phonetics,Chinese characters,vocabulary,grammar;the fourth chapter offers the feedback from Indonesian students and teachers on the exercises in those textbooks through questionnaires,which helps to understand how they actually use them;the fifth chapter evaluates the exercises in the three Chinese textbooks and puts forward some related suggestions.Chinese textbooks by Chinese scholars account for a large proportion of Indonesian Chinese textbooks.They are written in either English or Indonesian.Due to various factors including language and culture,students' learning habits and Chinese teachers,there exists problems while the exercises are being used.The main problems are as follows.The number of the exercises is large while the Chinese classes in Indonesian schools are not equally abundant.Teachers aren't able to deal with all the exercises in class.Although the exercises are rich in forms,the proportion of each form is not appropriate.Some types of exercise arenot even fully utilized,for most of them are quite difficult.As a result,they can't meet the needs of all students.What's worse,the exercises are not adaptive to Indonesian students.No wonder they are of little help for Indonesian Chinese-learning students.The author of the thesis has got long-term Chinese learning and teaching experience.Based on the research results of this thesis,the author has put forward some suggestions for the exercise editing for elementary Indonesian Chinese textbooks.There must be sufficient exercises,and at the same time,class exercises and after-class exercises must be distinguished.Types of the exercises should be moderate,and the connection and complementarity of the main question types and scattered question types must be strengthened.Meanwhile the question types must be suitable for Indonesian students.The exercises must also be well-arranged,from easy to difficult and in an orderly manner.The differences between Chinese and Indonesian must be taken into consideration.Localism is also more preferable.
