Research On Charity And Public Welfare Of YWCA In Shanghai(1919-1949)

Since the late Qing dynasty,philanthropy in Shanghai has continued to develop,among which there is a relatively special group,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai.In 1908,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai was founded.At first,it used the power of religion to gradually gather into a woman's organization and carried out corresponding religious activities and women's liberation movement.Since the end of the decade of the 20 th century,with the change of times and the change of social needs,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai has gradually changed from a religious organization to a social public welfare organization,advocating to provide services for the society.In 1919,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai began to engage in child welfare work and embarked on the road of transformation.Since the transformation to the founding of new China these 30 years,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai has carried out a number of important ministries,such as child welfare work,women relief and student relief.The charity and public welfare work of Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai has gone through three stagesof development: foundation and expansion,prosperity and stagnation,recovery and end,and has different characteristics in different stages.In addition to providing temporary emergency relief,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai pays special attention to both education and public welfare activities.It advocates that the relief recipients should master certain life skills through various kinds of training,and pay attention to the cultivation of their self-reliance character while providing material help.As a result of the good relief effect,Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai has won wide praise from all walks of life,established a good image of charity and public welfare,and provided a broad mass base for all kinds of fund-raising and charity sales.However,under the restriction of funds,the charity activities of Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai cannot be further developed.Through the years of charity and public welfare activities of Young Women Christian Association of Shanghai for a brief comb,on the one hand,it enlightens us to have a comprehensive and clear understanding of many Christian organizations in the period of the Republic of China,on the other hand,it may provide some reference and inspiration for today's charity organizations.
