This dissertation takes Sartre's imagination theory as the research object and tries to make a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of this theory.Sartre's imagination starts from the basic knowledge of psychology and phenomenology,so this paper first combs the criticism of Sartre's image problems in traditional metaphysics and psychology. It is clear that Sartre hopes to solve the two major problems of "perception and image" and "thinking and image",but is limited by the dilemma that the difficult problem of traditional metaphysics cannot be solved. Therefore,Sartre introduced Husserl's phenomenological theory, criticized Husserl's transcendental self and transformed the theory of intentionality as the core content of his imagination theory,in order to solve these two problems.Next,Sartre defines imagination as a type of consciousness, which belongs to consciousness as well as perception, and conceptual consciousness, but not the same. The key is that the object of imagination is assumed and absent, and imaginative activities have the principle of spontaneity, which is a state without purpose and involvement. The definition of imagination not only solves the problem of what imagination is,but also solves the problems of perception, thinking and image. In spite of this,we cannot have a comprehensive understanding of imagination only by virtue of the definition of imagination.Only through the imaginary materials to make three categories of imagination: the image of the world of things, the image between the world of things and the psychological world, and the image of the psychological world, can we understand and grasp the imagination more deeply. As Sartre's early thought, imagination theory is bound to lay the foundation for the subsequent development and evolutions of thought, especially the nothingness thought in the middle and the free thought in the later period are related to imagination. On the one hand, the purpose of their investigation is to prove that Sartre's thought is not broken and is coherent. On the other hand, through the thinking of the relationship between imagination, nothingness and freedom,it makes us understand that Sartre's ultimate goal of studying imagination, nothingness and freedom is consistent, and his concern is always the meaning of human existence.Imagination, nothingness and freedom are the key presentation of their respective stages. In Sartre's view, artistic activity is a kind of imaginative behavior, artistic work is the object of imagination, and art is inextricably linked with imagination, which is reflected not only in artistic appreciation, but also in artistic creation.Sartre through the guidance of literary creation is to directly intervene in society to achieve their own freedom,in order to tell creators to strive for freedom to become free people to write.Other form of artistic creation in Sartre's view is only an imaginative activity, although it can also strive for freedom, but not as violent as literary creation,so it focuses on the analysis of literary creation. From the above,we can see that both Sartre's philosophical thoughts and his literary thoughts always pay attention to the meaning of human existence and people's demand for freedom. His philosophical thought fundamentally provides a kind of proof of phenomenology and ontology, while the art theory regards art and aesthetics as the confirmation of human freedom and the connection between them is the framework of imagination theory. When analyzing art,it is also confirming the rationality of Sartre's thought theory.Imagination,as the bridge of thought, lays a clear path for the integrity of Sartre's theory.
