Alice Neel(1900-1984),one of the most influential artists in the United States in the 20 th century,is famous for portraiture.Her painting subject matter is broad and influenced by the European expressionist genre.She put herself in a lonely and marginal state and stayed away from the hustle and bustle of international art trends for a long time,and finally won the recognition of the art world.She is good at portraying everyday subjects,and she mainly focuses on indoor portraits and human portraits.Through the combination of subjectivity and objectivity,her style of work is simple,straightforward and expressive.The portraits she creates are extremely iconic,tending to a "minimalist" painting language and creative choices,and her works often show unfinished form characteristics.This "unfinished feeling" has made her unique painting language,and also become the spiritual symbol of her art works.It is the in-depth reveal of the nature of human life that made Neil a place in the history of Western art in the 20 th century and was hailed as one of the greatest portrait artists of the 20 th century.The sense of incompleteness is a subjective judgment experience produced by people when viewing painting works.And it is only used in aesthetic level as a kind of special and specific visual experience.This article takes the sense of incompleteness in Alice Neal's paintings as the research object,and explores its unique unfinished features and forms in her paintings to reveal its substantial connotation and artistic value.In chapter two,the causes of the sense of incompleteness in Neil's paintings are analyzed,and the impact of her life,growth environment,and educational background on the formation of her painting style is studied.Edward Munch,Graz and Kokoschka's artwork is used as a reference to explain the source of the visual characteristics of his Alice Neil painting style.Chapters 3 to 4 are the main content of the thesis.They analyze the visual representation and characteristics of the sense of incompleteness in Alice Neil's paintings in detail,and explain the evolution of the sense of incompleteness in Neil's paintings.In the discussion in this chapter,the visual psychology theory and the principle of visual perception are used to perform image analysis on the artist's representative works.In-depth analysis of how the artist uses the elements in the picture to present the sense of incompleteness.Through the analysis and interpretation of relevant elements in the picture,Reveals the completeness and freedom of Alice Neal's spirit hidden behind the appearance.In the last chapter of the thesis,I combine my own painting creation as the end.The author analyzes the internal laws of Neil's painting expressions and style characteristics,realizes and summarizes the creative characteristics,adopts different painting languages to present the sense of incompleteness,and tells the evolution of his creative face in different periods and the analysis of forms.In addition,I need to further improve and through my own a lot of practice and practice,in order to show my deep understanding of "unfinished feeling" in my works,and form my own unique painting style and academic height.
