With peace and development becoming the two major themes of our times, people have fully realized the importance of peace and development. As the saying goes,“Thinking of potential problems in times of peace”,although we are now living in a peaceful era and enjoying a superior material life,we still need to bear in mind the difficulties experienced in human history, especially to concern and explore the social history in time of interwar.Translation of such works still has an important influence in today's society. This translation report takes three excerpts from Social Conditions in Britain(1918-1939)as translation research texts, which are employment and unemployment, family income and expenditure, and housing.Guided by the theory of translation compensation,it makes a thorough analysis of the problem of “translation loss” in the process of translating Social Science Texts and seeks for an effective way of“translation compensation”.The thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section is a detailed statement made by the translator about the entire translation process, and the second section is a presentation of over 10,000-word English original and its Chinese translation. In the previous section, the translator gives a introduction of the translation task at first; The second is a detailed analysis of the text content, text types, and text characteristics; The third is the description of three translation steps, including translation preparation, translation analysis and translation proofreading; The next is the case study of the translation process.Guided by the translation compensation theory, the translator compensates for the loss of word meaning, syntax and text in the translation of social science text.At the level of compensation for word meaning, the translator adopts three compensation methods: substitution, extension and annotation to make the words used in the translation conform to the context of the original text and show the information of the original text;At the level of syntax, the translator takes full account of the features of the more complex sentences, more compound sentences and more passive sentences in social science texts, and usesthree syntactic compensation strategies, namely, splitting, dissolving and conversion,to realize the target language being more in line with the usage of Chinese. At the textual level, the translator restores and repeats some of the reference pronouns in the text, omits some of the functional words, and at the same time combs and enhances the logic of sentence cohesion. In the end,the translator summarizes and reflects on the translation process, not only concludes useful experience in translation, but also reflecting on the problems encountered during the translation process.Through this thesis, the translator hopes to provide domestic scholars in the field of social research with reference materials on the Britain social history in time of interwar. At the same time, the translator also hopes that the translation of this book will arouse people' s attention to the information about social conditions in the time of interwar, and they can learn from the history and make adequate preparations for future development.
