Zhang Shiyi(1886-1969)was a famous foreign language educator in modern China.He was the earliest and most influential expert in introducing direct teaching method.He innovated the first foreign language situation teaching theory,developed the junior middle school English textbooks,the direct method,the combination of English conversation and other influential foreign language textbooks,trained a large number of talents of foreign language teaching,such as Wu Tang,Fan Cunzhong and Lv shuxiang,On the basis of excavating,sorting out and analyzing relevant literatures,this study sorted out Zhang Shiyi's educational background and academic experience,systematically analyzed the formation process and source of his foreign language education thought,summarized the content and practice of his foreign language education thought,and summarized the characteristics and enlightenment of his foreign language education and practice.First,through the collection and interpretation of relevant literature,this paper analyzes the formation process and origin of foreign language education thought.In 1921,Zhang Shiyi gave a speech on English teaching method,first mentioning the significance of situation in English teaching,and the thought of foreign language education began to sprout.In the 1930 s and 1940 s,through foreign language teaching practice and teaching research,the direct teaching development theory suitable for China's national conditions was constantly explored,laying the foundation for the proposal of situational teaching theory.In 1948,a new theory of language teaching was published,which formed the foreign language education thought with the theory of situational teaching as the core.The formation of Zhang Shiyi's thought on foreign language education was closely related to his education and work experience,and was also influenced by Dewey's pragmatic education thought at that time.Second,the main content and practice of Zhang Shiyi's thought on foreign language education.Zhang shiyi's thoughts on foreign language education mainly include college talent view,foreign language teaching theory,and teacher education view.On the view of talents in universities,he proposed that education is the science of human ability,and education should cultivate talents with all-round and balanced development of morality,intelligence and physique.Method in foreign language teaching theory,he proposed in foreign language teaching localization using direct method,on the basis of theory and situational teaching theory,conforming to inspire revulsive originally,step by step,and combining with the teaching principle,pay attention to the teaching of listening,speaking,reading and writing skills,skills of foreign language teaching goal,the practical goals and personality target him from the foreign language teaching.Teachers in teacher education,the first thing to realize is the key to improve the quality of teaching,for the lack of foreign language teachers in quantity,quality is not high on the reality of the problem,put forward to develop the future teachers and promote the combination of the teachers,meet the demand of the teachers,to improve the quality of foreign language teaching in our country.Thirdly,summarize the characteristics and enlightenment of Zhang Shiyi's thought and practice of foreign language education.Through a deep analysis of Zhang Shiyi's thought and practice in foreign language education,it is concluded that the characteristics of Zhang Shiyi's thought and practice in foreign language education mainly include the following: 1.(2)emphasizing situational teaching and creating a good foreign language learning environment;(3)the combination of introduction and transformation,and the pursuit of localized teaching methods;(4)pay attention to observation and practice,and emphasize the accumulation of teaching experience in the process of teacher cultivation.Its implications for the reform of foreign language education in China are as follows :(1)to clarify the purpose of foreign language teaching is an important prerequisite for cultivating high-quality foreign language talents;(2)highlighting the combination of theory and practice in foreign language education is an important way to cultivate high-quality foreign language talents;(3)improving the teaching methods of foreign language majors is an effective way to improve the cultivation of foreign language talents;(4)the improvement of foreign language teachers is an important guarantee for the cultivation of high-quality foreign language talents.
