Tianjin is located in the lower reaches of the Haihe River. It has always been called "tiger gate Dagu" and "natural danger".It is not only the gateway to the capital, but also the transportation hub and salt industry center where the water transport and river transport converged in Ming and Qing Dynasties. It plays an important role in politics, economy and military.Tianjin is located in the Bohai Bay,with Liaodong and Shandong peninsulas as its portals. It has not suffered from marine invasion before the Ming and Qing Dynasties,so it has not been an important coastal defense area.Although Tianjin had coastal defense construction in the period of the end of Ming Dynasty and Wanli Zheng Dynasty,it mostly assumed the function of logistics base.It was not until the invasion of imperialist powers in the late Qing Dynasty that Tianjin was strengthened as an important coastal defense town.In the late Qing Dynasty,Tianjin experienced the initial construction of the Opium War,the consolidation of the second Opium War,and the modernization during the Westernization Movement, and finally formed a coastal defense system of Dagu fortress supported by Dagu,Beitang and Xincheng. As an early base of the Beiyang Navy,it formed a coastal defense system around Bohai Sea with Weihaiwei and Lvshun.Dagu fortress in Tianjin was built after the second Opium War and the G8 invasion of China. Therefore, from the perspective of Dagu fortress' s operation and war test, this paper focuses on the construction of Dagu fortress' s turret, the setting of artillery and the function of the fortress in the war.I hope that through the analysis of Dagu fortress' s function in the war,we can learn the experience and lessons to face the future military challenges.
