A Translation Project Report On Bread Givers(Excerpts)

This is a project report on the translation of Chapter One and Chapter Twenty-one extracted from Bread Givers,the masterpiece of Anzia Yezierska,a famous American Jewish female writer.In an autobiographical narrative way,the writer describes how Sara,a Jewish girl who immigrates to the United States,escapes the traditional patriarchal oppression of Jewish society and strives to pursue education,freedom,and love,which shows her cultural identity confusion and setbacks suffered during the Americanization.The author aims to explore difficulties and confusion experienced by young Jewish women in the early 20 th century in the process of overcoming gender and racial discrimination,and appeal for continued focus on the unequal treatment of women in the family.The author follows the theory of Semantic and Communicative Translation by Peter Newmark.With the guidance of the translation theory,the author flexibly uses translation methods and techniques such as literal translation,free translation,addition,omission,division,and shift,to solve the problems such as the translations of spoken words,loan words,and dialogue.Thus,the target language will have the same style as the original language and be concise,natural,and accurate enough to be accepted by readers.Through the translation practice,the author has realized that a novel translator must not only possess the solid bilingual foundation,but also the wealth of knowledge and practical experience.The in-depth understanding and skillful usage of translation theory is necessary for the translator,which will be conducive to the better target language.
