This is a practice report on the translation of novels.In this translation practice,the novel Tomorrow's Bread written by Anna Jean Mayhew is chosen as the source text.In accordance with the vivid memory of Mayhew growing up under the apartheid environment in the south of the United States,this novel tells the story of Brooklyn community in Charlotte City in the 1960 s.The United States,under the guise of “urban reconstruction”,destroyed the black community and hard-fought racial progress.The translator has selected from the first to fifth chapters of the book to translate and has written this translation report.Any translation practice cannot be separated from the guidance of theory,especially the translation practice of novels.Tomorrow's Bread is a popular novel.This type of novel conveys the author's writing intention to readers in an actual life language form.In this translation practice,the translator has chosen Newmark's communicative translation theory as guidance and adopted the corresponding translation strategies and methods to translate the novel in order to make translation meet the needs of the general public.In addition to adopting Newmark's communicative translation theory as guidance,the following aspects should also be considered to improve the quality of this translation practice.First of all,the translator has consulted materials to understand the creating background of the novel as well as writing style and relevant experience of the author in the pre-translation stage.Secondly,the translator has carefully considered the words that have cultural differences between China and the west as well as sentences with complex structures to find out the logical relationship implied in English and ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation during the translation process.Thirdly,in the process of proofreading,the translator has also taken Newmark's communicative translation theory as guidance to modify the translation version.After all,the target readers of popular novels are not only well-educated,but also the public who are not proficient in English.
