Affected by the early structuralist narratology, most of the studies on image narrative focus on the time dimension, while the space is considered to be stagnant and secondary, only mentioned as the background of the event. With the “spatial turn” in narratology, the role and function of space in film and television works have been put increasing emphasis on.As the spatial signifier of the film, the frame and shot have more advantages in meaning expression due to their priority to time in form. The documentary China's Mega Projects, dominated by space narrative, has truly reproduced social life, expressed characters' emotions and presented certain social and cultural significance.Through detailed text analysis, this paper focus on the spatial dimension of China's Mega Projects, discusses the form and function of narrative space, explores how to complete the narrative and expression of space through image approaches, and finds out the value orientation of space narrative. This paper consists of three chapters. The first chapter reviews the form and function of the narrative space of China's Mega Projects, striving to make a profound and highly-generalized grasp of the connotation of space and discussing how the four dimensions of geographical space, historical space, social space and spiritual space play their roles in film's theme expression, narrative development, character presentation and information transmission, etc. The second chapter analyzes the image construction methods of the space narrative of China's Mega Projects. From the perspective of image ontology, this part studies the audio-visual language and its combination of China's Mega Projects, explores how its image and sound system endow the film with unique meaning, shows its spatial characteristics, and promotes each space to complete its narrative and ideographic functions. The third chapter further elaborates the value orientation of the spatial narrative of super project based on the analysis of the image level.By exploring the spatial relationship inside and outside the screen, this chapter studies the connotation and profoundmeaning behind the film, and discusses the reflections and impacts the film brings to people and society.China's Mega Projects expands its narrative and expresses its purport in the process of presenting space.By virtue of rich spatial forms, great space charm and unique space structure,it creates a brand-new aesthetic experience, shows profound social attributes and cultural connotations, and presents the national image of a new era.Combining the space narrative “content” and narrative “form” of the documentary China's Mega Projects, this paper makes a comprehensive grasp of the establishment and connection of multiple spatial orders inside and outside the screen, which serves as a beneficial supplement to the space narrative theory of documentary and provides a reference for the creation of this type of documentary.
