Universal-quantification Construction "Yao X1 You X1,Yao X2 You X2,……" In Modern Chinese

This article takes the universal-quantification construction “Yao X1 You X1,Yao X2 You X2,……” in Modern Chinese as the research object,describes and analyzes the composition,logic-semantic relations,constructional meaning and pragmatic functions.This paper comprehensively use syntactics,semantics,pragmatics and other theoretical methods to elucidate the construction.The full text is divided into five chapters:Chapter One is Introduction.This paper reviews the relevant literature on the pattern of “Yao X You X”,summarizes the deficiencies of the existing research,and then explains the research methods as well as corpus sources.Chapter Two is the internal analysis of the “Yao X1 You X1,Yao X2 You X2,……” pattern.The typical members of the variable X are noun compositions,including noun,numeral,quantitative phrase and the attribute and headword phrase.At the same time,some predicates are nominalized and become peripheral members on account of pattern coercion.The constant “Yao” means “as long as someone want or need”,which is the fusion of the verb “Yao” and the conjunction “Yao”.The basic implication of “You” is possession,involving additional meaning of “more and better”.Chapter Three is the semantics of the “Yao X1 You X1,Yao X2 You X2,……” construction.Based on the construction grammar theory,“Yao X1 You X1,Yao X2 You X2,……” expression is judged as construction with the type of compound sentence.Then we analyze the logical semantic relations between components,drawing the conclusion that “Yao X” and “You X” are sufficient conditional relation,“Yao X1 You X1” and “Yao Xn You Xn” are coordinate relation.Finally,the universal-quantification meaning of the construction originates from highlighting the typical members of a category,or affirming the members at the end of a sequence.Chapter Four is the pragmatics of the “Yao X1 You X1,Yao X2 You X2,……” construction.According to the number of occurrences,it is found that the construction appears most frequently in the oral style,which is used to perform speech acts such as praise,boast or compliment;the second is the network style,which is for recommending or persuading the listener to accept someone or something;the third is the literary style,which is applied to mold the image of characters;the fourth is the political comment style,most of which is to propaganda and rouse the people work together to accomplish a large-scale political,economic or military activity;the last is the technical style,which is used to describe the objects introduced in the article.Chapter Five summarizes the main point and value of the research,then point out the research deficiencies and problems to be solved.
