With the increasing use of English in various occupations, secondary vocational teaching in English has received more and more attention. However,at present, oral English teaching in the secondary vocational school has the problem of “weak learning motivation, low oral English level”.With the traditional “cramming” teaching method, students who lack the opportunity of practicing and using English often “have English in the mind, but not in the mouth”,and their practical application ability can not be effectively developed, which seriously frustrates the enthusiasm and initiative of students and hinders the realization of English teaching objectives in secondary vocational schools. In view of the problems, the present study attempts to apply task-based teaching method in secondary vocational oral English teaching in the hope of changing the current situation and promoting oral English teaching level in secondary vocational schools.Based on previous studies and in accordiance with the requirements of English Curriculum Standards for Secondary Vocational School(issued by Ministry of Education in 2000),this thesis explores the application of the task-based teaching method in oral English teaching in the secondary vocational school. The study conducted an experiment of one-term oral English teaching, the subjects being Class 1-2,Accounting Major,Grade17 in a vocational school in Yongzhou. The results before and after the experiment were compared to show the effectiveness of the teaching method.Specifically speaking, this study designed three steps within the framework of the task implementation of Jane Willis, namely, the pre-task stage, the while-task stage, and post-task stage. In the pre-task stage,we first used a questionnaire to find out the students' attitude in English in Grade 17,and then conducted a pre-test of oral English in the experimental class and the control class to find out the level of oral English in the two classes. In the while-task stage,we carried out the task-based oral teaching method in the experimental class to stimulate the students' interest in oral English learning and to improve their the oral English level. In the post-task stage,we commented on the students' completion of tasks and their oral English proficiency. The experiment shows that:(1)task-based teaching method has different effects on different levels of students. For the high level students, the method has strengthened the ability of oral English communication;for the middle and low level students, the method has changed the situation where they do not dare to speak, and has improved the oral ability of this level to the greatest extent.(2)the task-based teaching method has not only improved the students' oral ability, but also improved students' ability to use English to a certain degree, that is,the overall English level is improved. This study has further verified the effectiveness of task-based teaching method in oral English teaching in secondary vocational schools, thus providing a concrete operational reference for the future oral English teaching in secondary vocational schools.
