A Report On The Translation Of Financial Commentary Texts From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Economic integration has been on a rapid development over the past few years.International financial media accelerate their market expansion,and Chinese financial media also seek to build Chinese “media carrier”.Financial commentary pays attention to financial lives and hot issues,which features both informative and professional characteristics of financial news,and policy-related and pertinent characteristics of news commentary,covering macroeconomics,capital markets,social affairs,etc.Therefore the English translation of financial commentaries is conducive to English readers getting the trend of international financial development,realizing the “go out” strategy of financial media.Under the guidance of German functional skopostheorie,the report takes the financial commentaries from CBN Weekly as translation materials,aiming to discuss the appropriate translation methods of financial commentaries to realize the effective communication of news.The report takes three rules of skopos theory,including skopos rule,coherence rule,fidelity rule,as a theoretical framework.According to the translation purpose and the features of financial commentaries,the translator analyzes specific cases on the lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.On the lexical level,especially on the financial terms,literal translation with annotation is utilized to facilitate the target readers’ understanding;omission is mainly used in dealing with lexical repetition and redundancy;literal translation of rhetorical devices could increase the readability of financial commentaries.On the syntactic level,due to the different syntactic structures between Chinese and English,combination and addition are mainly used.On the textual translation,free translation,literal translation,combination and division are adopted to achieve textual coherence.This report finds that when translating financial commentary texts,the translator should firstly define the translation purpose,and then adopt appropriate translation methods according to the text features and the reading habits of English readers,so as to achieve the best effect for information exchange of the translations;three rules of skopostheory play a significant role on English translation of financial commentaries,which further enriches the the application of skopos theory in practice.
