This translation practice report is based on the translation practice of A Companion to the History of the Book.It analyzes the feature of textual coherence and translation difficulties in social science texts.Through case analysis,it tries to summarize practical translation methods. The translation materials used in this report belong to social science text. The source text is more complex in content, and the sentence structure is changeable,so it shows obvious coherent features at the grammatical and semantic levels. However, there are differences in thinking habits and logical expressions between the Chinese and English,so how to present the coherent characteristics in the translation is the difficulty encountered by the author. Therefore, the author chooses Wang Dongfang's theory of textual coherence and focuses on grammatical coherence and semantic coherence, which are divided into five parts, including reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. The reference in this paper is personal pronoun and the author uses the method of amplification. The substitution in this paper is verb substitution and noun substitution and the author translates those substitution words as the word they substitute. The method used in translating the ellipse is the method of amplification. The method used in translating the conjunction is to make the logical word obvious. For the lexical cohesion, the author first finds the semantic field in the sentence and then according to the semantic field, translates certain word.In the end,the paper concludes and summarizes the author's work in the translation and points out the shortcomings of this translation practice.
