As Mo Yan's representative collection of short stories,Learning from Pu Songling presents folk stories and wonders about ghosts and monsters with the setting on Northeast Gaomi Township, which highlights his concerns on life value and expression of life consciousness.Based on the English translation practice of Learning from Pu Songling, this report analyzes specific translation cases to explore the guidance of Communicative Contextual Adaptation Theory to the whole practice. This report is composed of six chapters.Chapter one is task description, displaying the background and significance of the translation project.Chapter two is process description, describing three stages of the whole translation process: pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation.Chapter three is source text analysis, introducing the main content and features of Learning from Pu Songling.Chapter four is theoretical basis, which gives a relatively-detailed introduction of Adaptation Theory and focuses on introducing Communicative Contextual Adaptation Theory and its guidance to this translation practice.Chapter five is case study,as the core of the entire report, which displays fourteen translation cases to specifically explain how the translation is achieved and how the related difficulties are solved through various translation methods such as transliteration with annotation, borrowing and so on under the guidance of Communicative Contextual Adaptation Theory.Chapter six is conclusion, summarizing major findings, limitations and gained experience of the translation practice.Through the study on the English translation of Learning from Pu Songling, the translator finds that Communicative Contextual Adaptation Theory provides practical guidance to the translation of short stories.By adapting to the target readers' mental, social and physical worlds in communicative context,a relatively original translation is achieved smoothly and successfully. The translator hopes that this translation practice report can bring some inspiration and relevant references to the translation practice and study on similar texts in the future.
