In 2012,Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature,which accelerates the outgoing of Chinese culture.More and more people researches and studies Mo Yan's works,translation of Mo Yan's works,Mo Yan's awards,Chinese literature and the outgoing of Chinese literature from home to abroad.Goldblatt,the most important translator of Mo Yan,has brought a lot of Mo Yan's long novels to the world.However,quite a few translators start to translate the short stories of Mo Yan.Learning from Pu Songling is one of Mo Yan's representative collection of short stories,with no English versions,which presents the mystery and anecdote of Northeast Gaomi in folk stories and legend of ghosts.The author of this report translates the last six short stories in this collection under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory to further Mo Yan's short stories and provide some references for the translation of Mo Yan's short stories.This translation project is guided by Functional Equivalence Theory,which highlights the target readers' response.In the process of translation,the author uses the closet equivalent expressions,not only achieving the equivalence of words and sentences,but the functional equivalence between two languages and culture.This report consists of six parts.The first part discusses the background and significance of the project.The second part is the process of translation,including the pre-translation preparations,in-translation process and post-translation proofreading.The third part is the analysis of the source text,introducing the features of the last six stories in Learning from Pu Songling.The fourth part introduces the Functional Equivalence Theory and its role in this translation practice.The case studies of this translation practice is discussed in the fifth part under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.As the most important part,the author explores how to use different translation techniques such as conversion,addition,omission,conversion,etc.,to achieve functional equivalence on dialects,folk songs,religious words and cursing dialogues.The sixth part is the conclusion which summarizes the major findings and limitations of this translation practice.
