This translation project is a practice work on part of Everybody's Autobiography, written by Gertrude Stein,an American modernist novelist in the 20~thh century. In this autobiographical book,Stein shares with her readers her personal reflection of her writing journey as well as her understanding of success after she became a celebrity. The book provides great value to the research on Gertrude Stein and her writing style and significance to the research on modernist literature. The translation project selects the third chapter of the book,“Preparations for going to America”,which relates to Stein's personal preparations for going to America and her own reflections during that period. What is crucial about this translation project is how to use faithful targeted language in delivery of the writer's intention correctly in order that the target text is both readable and meaningful.Specifically, the key points and the difficulties of this translation project are the difficult words which include cultural-loaded words and common nouns in specific context, and long and complex sentences as well as sentences that feature repetition and continuous present tense.Guided by Nord's Function plus Loyalty principle, the above-mentioned key and difficult points in translation were analyzed and settled by translation skills including literal translation, interlinear notes and division etc. With the employment of these strategies, the text can be fully understood and the writer's intention can be effectively conveyed, thus the target text can be accepted by readers.Through the translation practice, the translator finds that on the one hand,in the translating process, the translators should give top priority to the correct delivery of the original information by using faithful and smooth target language on the basis of full understanding of the source text.On the other hand, the translators should take into consideration the difference of Chinese and English cultures to ensure that the target text can be accepted by target readers.
