The temple is a form of material carrier of popular belief,a sacred space of people ' s belief world.The Shigu Temple in Yuanping City,Shanxi Province,is a unique representative of the local popular faith.It is like a melting pot,not only the habitat of the traditional Confucian ‘loyalty and filial piety' culture,but also the popular belief,Buddhism and Daoism culture.Despite the vicissitudes of The times,the Shigu Temple has not been forgotten,now with a new look appears in the public view,like a old man who has experienced the vicissitudes of life,through time,through history.The Yuanping Shigu Temple is the most important religious resort in the local area.It is a temple integrating Buddhism,Daoism,Confucianism and popular beliefs,and a vivid picture of the localization of Buddhism.The Buddhist culture of the Temple is deeply integrated with the local cultural characteristics,which has high research value.The Shigu Temple is located at the foot of the rest of the Buddhist sacred place,Mountain Wutai.Influenced by the religious beliefs of Mountain Wutai,the worship of Buddhist deities has the same function as that of the local gods.This paper is divided into three parts.The first part is the introduction,which briefly describes the academic researches that have have been done onthe Shigu Temple,and also makes a detailed interpretation of this article.The second part is the main part of this paper,which is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces the geographical location,the natural environment and the legend of the origin of the Yuanping Shigu Temple,from which the credible information is precipitated,and tries to restore the initial situation.The second chapter describes the Confucian culture,Daoist beliefs,Buddhist beliefs and original beliefs of the Shigu Temple.From a religuous perspective,the author classifies various types of beliefs in the Shigu Temple,speculated and analyzed the sources of and influences of various beliefs.The third chapter analyzes the localization of Buddhism and its embodiment in folk custom.The reasons for the localization of Buddhism include:the integration and assimilation of traditional Chinese culture,the connention between traditional Chinese culture and Buddhist culture,and the attitude of the rulers towards Buddhism.Finally form the situation of co-prosperity and co-existence with Chinese folk culture.The third part summarizes this article,and suppliments the appendix of inscriptions and other important data.
