The Chinese teaching in Sri Lanka has a long history starting from the 1970 s and its evolution was after the establishment of Confucius Institute in 2007 and 2009.Since more than a decade of development,Chinese teaching in Sri Lanka is gradually on track.Recently,along with putting forward “Belt and Road Initiative”,China and Sri Lanka have gradually closer interaction in terms of politics,economy and culture.With raising enthusiasm for learning Chinese within Sri Lankans,students who study Chinese in Confucius Institute and Class are increasing.Therefore,government-sponsored or voluntary teachers sent by Confucius Institute Headquarters to Sri Lanka are also increasing.The author went to Sri Lanka for teaching in 2018,surveyed and knew that there were 32 government-sponsored and voluntary teachers,respectively teaching at three Confucius Institute with teaching points and one Confucius Class.Among these teachers,18 voluntary teachers arrived to Sri Lanka in 2018,teaching at two Confucius Institute with teaching points and one Confucius Class.As volunteer teachers from China gradually increasing annually,they will face distinct cultures in Sri Lanka,especially for volunteers who come to Sri Lanka for the first time.The majority of teachers never face heterogeneous culture before,so they will inevitably encounter intercultural conflict.For instance,cross-culture communication problems when contact with local people in daily life,teaching issues due to several culture factors,etc.Whether these culture conflicts will affect volunteers' work and life or not? How do volunteer teachers deal with culture conflicts? Regarding these problems,the author takes researches from several aspects which state below.In the first part,it will discuss the reason for topic choice,research content,research objective and significance,research thinking and method.In addition,summarize articles related to intercultural communication.And analyzing nation conditions of Sri Lanka in three aspects including geography and culture,history and culture,and festivals and culture.In the second section,it will utilize inductive analysis toward the cases,based on Dutch psychologist Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory.This study will conduct a detailed analysis toward sources,the theoretical basis for classification and the specific classification of 21 cases.In the third part,the author analyzes reasons for voluntary Chinese teachers' cross-culture problems in Sri Lanka from objective and subjective perspectives.In the fourth part,it will provide several strategies from personal,Confucius Institute Headquarters and social aspects to solve these cross-culture problems.
