A Report On The Translation Of Lilac Girls(Excerpts)

The translation material of this report is excerpted from a historical novel published in2016,Lilac Girls,which was authored by Martha Hall Kelly.The novel tells the story of three completely different women during the war,describes World War II and those unsung women in a first-person manner and woman's unique perspectives,and reveals the power of those women to change history in their quest for love and freedom.Feminist translation theory holds the view that translation is the carrier for the female translator to achieve their theory and political views.It advocates that in the translating process the translator should adopt feminist translating strategies to provide discourse spaces for the female translator.According to Sherry Simon,fidelity is to be directed toward neither the writer nor the reader,but toward the writing project,a project in which both the writer and the translator participate.It puts emphasis on translation's difference and translator subjectivity.In the process of translation,the translator is allowed to adopt various translation strategies to intervene the text so as to show clear feminine consciousness and make the feminine visible in the text.And Von Flotow put forward three main feminist translation strategies,i.e.,supplementing,hijacking and footing and prefacing.This report introduces Martha Hall Kelly and her work Lilac Girls,feminist translation theory and the significance of this translation report.This report describes the translation process and analyzes some cases in practice,in which the manifestation and reconstruction of female image and female consciousness in literary works are discussed,and the corresponding translation methods and translation strategies are proposed.Finally,it summarizes the purpose,significance and deficiencies of this report.This translation report examines the translation methods and skills of feminine literature under the guidance of feminist translation theory,and thus is hoped to be served as a paradigm for future researches of feminine literature translation.
