Studies On Zhang Ailing’s Translation Of The Sing-Song Girls Of Shanghai: A Perspective Of Feminist Translation Theory

Zhang Ailing is well known as a novel writer and her fictions were popular ather time that mostly concern young men and women. Besides, Zhang Ailing is aqualified translator as well, and she has translated some famous works into Chinese.She stands out by her translations from Chinese to English, for instance, hertranslation of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai originally written in Wu dialect by thewriter of the Qing Dynasty Han Bangqing. The present author fixes her sights on thisnovel. She attempts to analyze in depth various levels of The Sing-song Girls ofShanghai from the perspective of the Feminist Translation Theory. The present authorsenses some feminist features by way of analyzing the translation texts. For instance,a feminist translator inclines to use some special translation strategies like prefacing,supplementing and hi-jacking. In Zhang Ailing’s translation of The Sing-song Girls ofShanghai, we could find the realization of these strategies. This thesis proposes thatthe English translation of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai shines with some feministtranslation ideas.To begin with, this thesis takes the Feminist Translation Theory as the theoreticalfoundation of this study, and probes into Zhang Ailing’s profile so b as to draw out hertranslation idea. Zhang Ailing’s feminist complex has directly affected her translationprocessing. The idea that Zhang Ailing’s translation conforming to the FeministTranslation Theory has its root in her feminist complex has been rarely discussed inthe previous studies. Then in Chapter Four, the main body of the thesis, the presentauthor attempts to study how the English translation of The Sing-song Girls ofShanghai gives full play to the Feminist Translation Theory and analyze the Englishtranslation of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai in three aspects:“HighlightingFeminist Subjectivity”,“Breaking the Binary Opposition”, and “Innovating Translation Strategies”, which are typical of Feminist Translation Theory. Finally, thisthesis draws the conclusion that the translated version of The Sing-song Girls ofShanghai is a typical work reflecting the Feminist Translation Theory, and that hertranslation version could serve as an example for studying the Chinese translators’acceptance of the Feminist Translation Theory. It must be admitted that Zhang Ailingis a translation talent as well as a noted woman writer.
