| Deploying Functional Grammar is a systemic functional linguistics course book that is compiled by J.R.Martin et al.A number of ideas in the book are of great value for linguistic research, such as the ideas of clause complex, theme and rheme, and the system of transitivity, etc. This report is based on the translation of the Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of the book, which respectively deal with the system of mood and the system of transitivity of clause.Since the source text is an academic text — a metalanguage text dealing with the grammar of the English language, the density of technical terms as well as intricacy of long sentences makes its translation at least formidable,if not totally impossible. Therefore, only when the translator has paid great efforts to read and analyze the source text could she grasp the ideas of this abstract text thoroughly. Before translating the text, the translator had read the source text for several times, but she failed to crack the source text due to her limited knowledge of linguistics. In most cases,it would be impossible for the translator to comprehend the source text without her supervisor’s enlightenment. The translator selected the Explicitation strategy from the Catharina Reiss’ s Text Typology and the Catford’s Translation Shift Theory to guide her translation, and she listed out several translation techniques under the guidance of the two translation theories.Additionally, the translator chose a few key and difficult issues worthy of discussion and gave out the corresponding solutions.Throughout the whole translation, the translator strived for the clarity and coherence of the target text based on its faithfulness to the source text.Through the translation, the translator has obtained a preliminary understanding of the systemic functional grammar and has learned to analyze the English language phenomena from the perspective of systemic functional grammar.Hopefully, this report can be of some value for MTI students when they translate the similar texts. |
