This is a report on the translation project. The source text is the first chapter Food Safety –Problems and Solutions taken from the book named Significance,Prevention and Control of Food Related Diseases. This translation practice is done under the guidance of functional equivalence put forward by Eugene A.Nida, which requires the achievement of readers' equivalence, namely, the reception of target readers to target text is almost same with that of source readers to source text.In addition, the report will combine text typology by Katharina Reiss to make detailed analysis to the source text.Based on text typology, text can be roughly divided into four types, namely, informative text, expressive text, operative text and audio-media text.Reiss insists that different text types possess different purposes and as a result of this different translation methods should be applied and targeted to different text types. In the light of the definition of text types by Reiss, the source text in this translation practice is included in the category of informative text type which aims to convey large amount of information to readers accurately and positively therefore its translation should reproduce the content of source text accurately and completely. On the characteristics of the informative text as well as the translation difficulties—the translation of term and passive voice in the translation process, the translator adopts different translation techniques—literal translation plus explanation and shift of perspective, hoping to realize the requirements of functional equivalence.
