This translation report is based on the English to Chinese translation of the Monograph Phonology: Theory and Description(chapter 5-6)written by Andrew Spencer and published in 1996.The book wins wide recognition since its publication,yet has not been translated into Chinese thus far.The author of this report selects Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 of the book as its source text.In this report,the author focuses on the translation of parenthetical elements in English and makes analysis in dealing with these elements during translation.The report consists of five parts.In Chapter 1,the author introduces briefly the translation task,the book and its author,the requirements for the task and the report structure.Chapter 2 includes the preparation the author has made for the task,arranging her task schedule and collecting relevant references for the translation work.Chapter 3 records the author's translation process.She starts with making analysis of the source text;records the major difficulties that surface along the translation process;does selfproofreading and peer-editing with her classmate,and then invites her supervisor for further polishing to secure high performance of the task.Chapter 4 comprises the core part of the report,in which the author centers on the treatment of parenthetical elements in English to Chinese translation,as she finds that these parts make huge contribution in such an informative and educative book.The last chapter summarizes the author's reflection and outlook of this translation task.The author of this report wishes to acquire an in-depth understanding of phonology and to improve her professional skills through this translation practice.Upon the completion of this translation task,the author comes to realize that every step required for this task is necessary to reach a satisfactory result.The author also hopes that this report would be helpful to similar translation practices.
