The purpose of translation is to achieve cultural exchange, while translation faults would cause barriers to cultural exchange.Translation of academic works, both in C-E and E-C translation,is faced with four major problems: the translation of terms;the translation of sentences and the transformation of sentence structure;discourse cohesion and coherence, and the leap of cultural divide, all of which are gradually escalating. Therefore, the author aims to explore how to achieve information equivalence in the process of translating academic texts of Chinese phonology into English at these four levels progressively. In this thesis, taking the Chinese to English translation project of A Textual Research on Rhyme Tables as an example, the author tries to explain the methods and strategies in achieving information equivalence,so as to research the inherent academic value in the book and translate it accurately and completely into English.By analyzing the textual characteristics of the excerpts of the part, the author tries to use the case study and deductive research methods from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax, discourse, linguistic concepts and cultural information that it contains. The author aims to show the readers how to realize information equivalence in the process of translation. At the lexical level, the author uses translation methods as literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration together with adding notes and using Chinese characters to translate terms. At the syntax level, information equivalence is achieved through the complete translation of sentences and the proper transformation of sentence structure. At the cultural level, the author focuses on cultural information as religion, society and context. Finally the author comes to a conclusion that it is more effective to achieve information equivalence in translation by transliteration and adding notes together with the method of liberal translation.
