| The report is based on the third part of The Oxford Handbook of the Theory of International Law(hereinafter referred to as “the Handbook”),which gives an account of important theories and rules in the international law.Different from such documents related to legal practice as statutes,regulations,judgments and contracts,the Handbook is featured by legal systems,principles and culture.Basic concepts or technical expressions those concern are thus the keys to a correct understanding of the Handbook.The author first sorts typical problems confronted into two categories: 1.synonym and polysemy,2.legal culture-loaded expressions.Then the author puts forward relevant translation strategies tailored to these in the following chapter.To be specific,it would be better to resort to both law dictionaries and the context for a good understanding of legal concepts with similar meanings.In addition,the author explains the word choices from two aspects: the form(grammar)and the content(meaning).As to legal culture-loaded expressions,it is encouraged to complement some law-related knowledge in the body part or the footnote for readers' sake.Last but not least,by analyzing and resolving these key questions put forward concerning the Handbook translation,the author hopes to provide some references for the translation of international law-related expressions and suggestions to deal with other legal texts. |
