Study Of Interpreting Strategies Of Chinese-specific Expressions In International Conferences Based On Functional Equivalence Theory

Chinese-specific expression refers to phrases with China’s unique culturalconnotation with five thousands of years. Nowadays China plays an indispensablerole in the international world and draws the attentions of the people from differentcountries result of China’s social development and progress. A large number ofChinese-specific expressions in the speech are great trail to interpreters. Takeappropriate strategies and methods in interpretation is the key to deal with theChinese idioms in practice.In this thesis, Nida’s functional equivalence theory is used to analyze thekeynote. First of all, the thesis summarized the Chinese and western studies of thistheory and then, the thesis elaborated the functional equivalence theory, Nida’sdefinition of the essence of translation, for example, the definition of functionalequivalence theory, the interpretation of the functional equivalence theory, and thecontribution of this theory.The thesis first overall elaborated on research topics, including researchbackground, research scope, research significance, research methods, researchinnovation, and the organizational structure of the entire article has been detailed inthe beginning The thesis explains the interpreting strategies in the process of translation whichto explain the words by functional equivalence theory. These strategies include literaltranslation, annotation, explanation, conversion and addition, etc.At the end of this thesis, it makes a conclusion that the application of functionalequivalence theory to the translation of culture-specific terms is effective. In thepractice of interpretation, the interpreter should obey the principles of the functionalequivalence theory and adopt appropriate interpreting strategies to deal with thecultural information contained in the Chinese-specific expressions. At the same time,the interpreter should increase the daily accumulation of study. Only in this way canthe interpreter produce more and more qualified interpreting works so as to make thetarget audiences understand the connotation of the original culture better, thusachieving the goal of spreading the culture with special Chinese characteristics.At last, the limitations of the thesis and suggestions for further translation studiesrelated the current research is put forward. The thesis is an attempt to share aninterest in this field.
