A Study Of C-E Translation Of Children's Literature From The Perspective Of Register

Bronze and Sunflower is the full-length novel written by Cao Wenxuan,a famous writer of contemporary Chinese children's literature.The English version of this novel was translated by Helen Wang and won the Pen Award and Marsh Award for Children's Literature in Translation,which promotes the sale of Bronze and Sunflower in the western market and enhances its popularity among target readers in the West.Therefore,this paper takes Bronze and Sunflower and its English version for a case study,aiming at popularizing Chinese children's literature.Currently,most domestic scholars adopt traditional translation theories to analyze children's literature,but this paper combines translation studies with the register theory in linguistics,whose three social variables are: field,tenor and mode.Therefore,this paper analyzes the register markers of the original version at the lexical,syntactic,phonological and discourse levels in relation to the three variables.The research question is how the translated version represents the register features in the original version and achieves register equivalence between the two versions.This paper analyzes excerpts of the natural scenes,the social environment,characters' speeches,actions and songs in the translated version based on field,finding that the translated version represents the original register features.In terms of tenor,this paper studies dialogues and interprets interpersonal relationship between speakers.The final part is to analyze the oral language variety and the written language variety from mode,studying the reproduction of the original language style.In conclusion,this paper points out that during the translation process,translators must fully master register features,together with the characteristics of children's literature,for vividly representing the characters' images and language style.
