At present,centering on translation,the language service industry is booming and plays an increasingly important role in various aspects of social and economic life.With the continuous development of translation studies in China,academic translation accordingly has been paid more and more attention to among the translation circle.Nida's functional equivalence theory highlights that the translated text should reproduce information in the source text as much as possible,which is consistent with the main purpose of academic works that mainly conveys information.The theory stresses that translators need to pay attention to the reader's response and reproduce the original information with the closest natural equivalent in the receptor language so that they can get rid of the constraints of the original structure without pursuing formal equivalence and have more freedom of translation on the basis of faithfulness to the original text.The theory also attaches great importance to the stylistic equivalence between the source text and the target text.The translation of academic text should embody the stylistic characteristics,such as accurate diction,objective statement,rigorous logic and explicit organization.Therefore,the theory has strong applicability in the translation of academic text.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the report refers to discussion of the translation of Hermeneutics and Rhetoric: A Seen But Unobserved Relationship at lexical level and syntactical level,and endeavors to summarize some translation strategies and methods to achieve lexical and syntactical equivalence.In regard to the lexical level,the difference of convention between source language and target language should be taken into consideration in the process of translation.At the syntactic level,the reader's response should be put in the first place.The long sentences which are frequently used in academic works should be translated coincided perfectly with the expression of the target language in order to better convey the original meaning.Through this translation practice,the author not only has a better understanding of functional equivalence theory,but also has improved the translation skills.
