The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons is a science work by American author Sam Kean. The book exposes the amazing history of the human brain with true stories of trauma, madness, pain, and healing. In these cases, neurosurgeons confront with complex diseases, and the common people who suffer from those show what they have in common as heroes. The reasons that the translator choose this book as the translation text are listed as follows: First, this book is a science work, that is,the author is responsible for the authenticity or accuracy of the events, characters or information presented in his works. On the other hand,it is because the author presents those complicated and boring medical theories in a vivid and interesting way with his unique writing style and the listed real stories, which allows these profound and complicated medical terms to infiltrate into the stories.By doing this, readers can not only enjoy reading but also learn relevant knowledge.Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory is selected in this paper to translate the script during translation practice by combining various translation methods and strategies.Considering the characteristics of technical terms translation and how to combine technical terms with the author's unique language emotion and writing style, the translator analyzes and studies the above problems from the corresponding aspects of functional equivalence theory. The meaning of a word lies in its usage. There are many established medical English terms in the original text, but there also exist words which are needed to understand its meaning according to the context so as to transform it into professional technical terms. Therefore, even technical terms with limited alterability should follow the principle of equivalence.Generally speaking, there are several strategies and methods for the translation of medical English terms, namely literal translation, free translation, transliteration, the combination of sound and meaning, and form translation and borrowing.Translators use these translation methods to translate technical terms in this book under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. The translator hopes that the translation of such scientific and literary works can improve her own translation level and provide some references for the translation of technical terms.
