From the perspective of manipulation theory proposed by Andre Lefevere, this thesis probes into the features of C-E novel translation and general strategies, based on the translation history of Chinese novels and a case study of Jia Pingw's Happy Dreams. The research shows that there have been four stages with different features under the influence of different manipulative factors.First,in the primary period dominated by state institutions(1949-1966),the source-text selection intends to set up a positive image to the west, and the translation advocates cultural self-filtration.Second,in the stagnant and negative period(1967-1977),the selection is single and the translation advocates patronage-oriented translation because of the Cultural Revolution.Third, with the policy of Reform and Opening up in the breakthrough period(1978-1999),the selection is gradually oriented to the readers, and the translation has made a breakthrough in negative information and political contents.Fourth,in the diversified period(2000-),various source-text selection and flexible translation meet the demands of market and readers. And then,by analyzing the translation of Happy Dreams, this thesis finds that in terms of ideology, the translator adopts free translation and addition to deal with unique religious information, and some English idioms are borrowed to translate the sex-related contents to satisfy readers' curiosity. In terms of poetics,to conform to the reading habits of English readers and spread Chinese culture, the translator turns some fonts into italics, deletes some original information and adopts flexible strategies, such as equivalents, free translation, addition, creative translation, etc. As for the characters' names and the title of this novel, transliteration, free translation and addition are used to reveal author's implying meaning. In addition, the patronage plays a critical role in source-text selection and the dissemination of this novel.Based on the historical research of C-E novel translation and case studies, this thesis suggests weakening the influence of political factors, focusing on the demands of the market and readers, and adopting more flexible translation strategies to promote more translated Chinese novels to go out.
