Vocabulary is very important in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. It's obvious that vocabulary outline plays a basic guiding role in various Chinese tests.GCSE Chinese is one of the mainstream Chinese language test programs developed in the UK.New HSK is a national Chinese language standardization test developed by Hanban for non-native Chinese speakers. Therefore, this thesis takes GCSE Chinese and New HSK vocabulary as the research object and divides into five chapters: the first chapter,a brief introduction to GCSE Chinese,New HSK and their vocabulary outlines;the second chapter, description and comparison of the vocabulary outlines of GCSE Chinese and New HSK from two aspects: arrangement and word count;the third part, analysis of the coincident vocabularies in GCSE Chinese and New HSK;the fourth part, comparison of the different vocabularies in the GCSE Chinese and New HSK;the fifth part, vocabulary matching analysis of two sets of official textbooks;the sixth part, summary of the arranging philosophy embodied in GCSE Chinese and New HSK vocabulary outlines, and my own views on the shortcomings of both.By comparing the vocabulary outlines of GCSE Chinese and New HSK,this thesis draws conclusions from a large number of data statistics and analysis. It's concluded thatthere are 924 words in GCSE Chinese vocabulary outline while 5000 words in New HSK vocabulary outline, which shows a huge difference;GCSE Chinese vocabulary outline is mainly arranged in a topic-oriented way, with little correlation between the two grades while GCSE Chinese vocabulary outline is arranged in Chinese phonetic order directly based on the frequency of use, with a clear number of grades and a steady increase almost by twice;the vocabulary of GCSE Chinese can basically meet the requirements of HSK 1st but barely reach the requirements of HSK 2nd;440 words in GCSE Chinese vocabulary outline are not included in New HSK vocabulary outline,and72 words inNew HSK 1st and 2nd vocabulary outline are not included inGCSE Chinese vocabulary outline;thevocabulary matching degree between Edexcel GCSE Chinese(9—1)and GCSE Chinese vocabulary outline is only 20.89% while HSK Standard Courses 1,2 and New HSK vocabulary outline is 96.33%;GCSE Chinese vocabulary outline reflects its arranging philosophy of distinctive communicative themes, prominentcultural features and on the application of Chinese characters while New HSK vocabulary outline pays more attention to the hierarchical principle. However, both outlines have shortcomings in terms of word collection and arrangement. This thesis draws theseconclusions through comparative analysis,in order to increase the understanding of these two examinations for teachers of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, provide reference for other researchers to conduct in-depth research, and provide reference for all kinds of internationalized Chinese test propositions and reforms.
