Comparison is a kind of way for human to cognize and study things,as well as a basic method of linguistic research.With the interactions between language contacts,influencing of languages each other and development of language itself,and many other reasons,the word formation method of Chinese and Uyghur compound words is widespread and it provides a platform for the comparison of these two languages'compound words,which helps us to further explore the cognitive motivation behind compound words.As one of the important cognitive style of human beings,metonymy has played a significant role in human's understanding on a subject,conceptual structure formation of things and development of languages.Herein the Chinese and Uyghur compound words are selected as research object,it is attempted to find out as much as possible commonness and differences between these two languages from cross-language comparisons,and probe into the mechanism and principle of their operation.The article,from the perspective of comparative linguistics and mainly by combining the methods of description with explanation,quantitative study and qualitative research,discusses 3052 examples of the Uyghur and Chinese compound words?of which,Chinese 1644 and Uyghur 1408?with metonymy meaning which are collected from Modern Chinese Dictionary(the 7th edition)and Dictionary of Uyghur and Chinese,it is divided into five chapters,the first chapter is an introduction which discusses the current status of research,object of study and research meaning of Uyghur and Chinese compound words,the second chapter compares and analyzes the structure type of compound words generated from metonymy and it is found out that there are four-type compound word in Uyghur and Chinese language,associative,slanted,Verb-object,and subject-predicate.The third chapter divides the basic pattern of compound metonymy into the following five types according to whether the two root morphemes inside the compound word have metonymic meanings:compound metonymy C1,compound metonymy C2,compound C1&C2metonymy at the same time,compound C1&C2 with overall metonymy and compound word under combined influence of metaphor and metonymy.The forth chapter,as the core part of article,mainly analyzes the types of metonymical meanings of Uyghur and Chinese compound words,including more than ten types,such as whole and part,concrete things and abstract concepts,concrete things and action modes,attributes,materials,etc.the fifth chapter is a brief summary of the article,and the prospect of future relevant research.By comparing and analyzing the metonymy patterns of the two compound words,on the one hand,it can enrich the theory of contrastive linguistics,on the other hand,it can also in turn direct practice of contrastive study of Chinese and Uyghur vocabulary,and promote their vocabulary development.In general,the article seeks to made a comprehensive and thorough research on Uyghur and Chinese compound words,the aim is not only to explore in theory aspect,it is also hoped to provides helps in practice,such as providing certain reference value in promoting bilingual teaching and translation theory research,and then,to offer some alternative methods for the Han and Uyghur ethnic groups to learn languages from each other.
