A Translation Report On The Excerpt Of Records Of Streets And Alleys In Chengdu Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

This is a Chinese-English translation report on the excerpt of Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu.The book,written by Yuan Tingdong,introduces us the cities,rivers,bridges,streets and alleys of old Chengdu,vividly describes the history,local culture and customs in detail.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology,the source text can be characterized by informative text,therefore,guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the translator tries to use a variety of translation methods accordingly for the translation practice.The translation report will discuss in detail how the translator solves translation problems under the guidance of communicative translation theory.The translator lists examples mainly from three levels,which are the lexical level,the syntactic level and the discourse level.At the lexical level,the translator applies communicative translation theory by means of conversion,omission and amplification;At the syntactic level,the translator uses translation methods such as shift of active and passive voice,cutting and recasting of long sentences;At the discourse level,the translator gives examples from the perspective of cohesion and coherence.It can be concluded that the translator has achieved huge progress through this translation practice.In addition,the target text may be able to provide reference value if the English version of Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu were to be officially published.In order to achieve the goal of Chinese culture “going globally”,it’s necessary to publish more English translation version of literatures that relate to Chinese culture.
