A Report On The Translation Of Records Of Streets And Alleys In Chengdu(Excerpt)under The Guidance Of The Communicative Translation Strategy

This report selects some chapters of Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu as the translation and research object,to study the translation strategy and translation techniques for the translation of Chinese historical documents.The Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu,with the informative text as the main characteristic,is a historical document abundant with features of the Chinese language and culture.For achieving cross-cultural communication and making the translation conform to the language habits of English readers,the author takes the communicative translation strategy as the guidance.The communicative translation strategy is applied in the translation practice and its effects on the translation of Chinese historical documents are studied.Under the guidance of the communicative translation strategy,this report analyzes the translation from the word level,the sentence level and the discourse level.What's more,translation techniques adopted in the translation process are analyzed by case studies.Annotation and paraphrase are adopted to translate cultural connotations in this book in order to achieve communicative purposes;omission is used to avoid repetition and redundancy;conversion,division and recombination are utilized to make translation smooth and fluent.The research shows that the communicative translation strategy should be adopted,with the auxiliary of semantic translation,in the translation of historical documents which are informative texts but abundant with cultural connotations.The translation should deliver the information of the source text effectively and faithfully and conform to the expectations of English readers.In this way,the cross-cultural communication can be achieved;Chinese local history and culture can be spread effectively and cultural confidence can be strengthened.
