As a mirror of social life, vulgar language is a special language form with rich and colorful culture of a nation, showing the distinctive language characteristics of a nation. In literary works, vulgar language can be used by the author to shape the image of characters, which can not only help to embody the social status, educational background of the character, but also reflect their social etiquette, ethics, ideology, customs, values and so on.Therefore, vulgar language bears a value that cannot be neglected in transmitting folk culture and social customs. However, due to the“rudeness” of vulgar language, the research values of it are easily overlooked and the studies related to it are still in minority.Hence, the issue of vulgar language translation should be paid more attention to by scholars.Besides, researchers should attempt to explore the study of vulgar language from different theoretical perspectives.Mo Yan is the winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. The main feature of his works is to reflect the customs and culture of Chinese folks. Thus,he usually makes an integration of elegance and vulgarity in the use of language.Through statistics analysis,it can be seen that there is a lot of vulgar language employed in Mo Yan's novels, including Red Sorghum.Red Sorghum was translated by Howard Goldblatt in 1993 and the English version was highly acclaimed and obtained astonishing success in America and it was selected as the “world's best novels” in1993 by World Literature Today.Howard Goldblatt,a famous American translator and sinologist, has made great use of various translation strategies to make Red Sorghum achieve a warm response internationally, which has aroused the close attention of scholars. Thus,it's necessary to delve into the translation strategies in Red Sorghum.According to the author's literature review, although domestic and foreign scholars have made researches on Red Sorghum from many angles, few of them havepaid attention to the vulgar language from the perspective of eco-translatology.Thus,it is necessary to analyze and investigate the vulgar language in Red Sorghum from eco-translatology.As is a new theory originated in China, the eco-translatology has obtained considerable development in the past two decades, which has brought new angles and methods to the study of translation field.Based on Darwin's principle of“natural selection and survival of the fittest”,eco-translatology can be adopted to analyze the translation in view of “selection” and “adaptation”,which offers new interpretations to the translation nature, process and standards. This thesis employs qualitative analysis as the major study approach and from the perspective of eco-translatology,it also analyzes the vulgar language in Red Sorghum from three dimensions: linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension so as to explore the translation strategies of vulgar language in literary works. In the linguistic dimension, the translation strategies at lexical level, syntactic level and rhetorical devices are mainly discussed;in the cultural dimension, the author digs into the translation strategies of culture-loaded words in the similar and different eco-environments;in the communicative dimension, the author studies on the employment of supplement, omission, literal and free translation strategies to achieve the communicative goal.Through the study of Red Sorghum,it can be seen that during the translation process,Howard Goldblatt first adapts to the eco-environment in the source language and then finds out the original meaning of the vulgar language in the text according to its context and select a similar expression to maintain the original language and cultural characteristics of the source language,by which the image of the character can be presented vividly to the target language readers.Through the study of the thesis,it can be concluded that the eco-environment of vulgar language in the literary works has changed during the C-E translation process,so translators should be familiar with the rules of the two languages during the process of translation and try their best to achieve three-dimensional adaptive selection and conversion in the linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension,by which The highest degree ofintegration in translation can be obtained.Hopefully the thesis can offer useful references and shed a light for the future studies on C-E translation of vulgar language in literary works.
