Modern Confucian Culture And Corporate Donation

Years of practical experience has proved that,except for government control,we also need to give full play to the function of social self-regulation to maintain a good social order.Giving full play to the power of social organizations to participate in social governance is the key to promoting China's modern governance.As an important social organization,enterprises are the link and bridge between the economic and social system,individuals and families.It is of great significance to actively guide enterprises to assume social responsibilities to promote stable and sustainable social development.Among them,corporate donation is regarded as an important dimension of corporate social responsibility,which plays an important role in poverty relief,social stability,and fighting against epidemics,which is a topic of great concern to researchers.Under the idea of social management through formal system,the emphasis on adding various rules and regulations is obviously not applicable to corporate donation.Therefore,this paper will start from the perspective of informal system and take Confucian culture,the core of Chinese traditional culture,as the starting point to explore the influence of Confucian culture on corporate donation behavior.In theory,"benevolence" is the core of Confucian culture and has an obvious tendency of altruism,so it plays a positive role in promoting corporate charitable donation.This paper starts from Freud's personality structure theory in psychology,Putnam's social capital theory in sociology and Snow's informal institutional theory in economics.Secondly,It based on China's a-share listed companies from 2008 to 2017 as the research object,and through the empirical study of pooled regression verified the view that the higher Confucius temple existing rate of company's premises area is,the more positive enterprise charity is,indicating that modern Confucianism still maintain the altruism part of the traditional Confucianism,and significantly impact on enterprise donation.As for the measurement of Confucian culture,this paper innovates on the basis of the original literature and adopts the existing rate of Confucius temple within the radius of the company as the measurement index of modern Confucian culture.On the one hand,the country has attached great importance to the inheritance and development of excellent traditional culture in recent years.On the other hand,we have reviewed the historical evolution of Confucian culture in detail,considering that cultural evolution is influenced by social changes.Confucius temple is the symbol of Confucian culture.The existing rate of Confucius temple reflects the local recognition and inheritance of Confucian culture in the context of modern globalization.Therefore,it is of more practical significance to choose Confucius temple to measure the spontaneous inheritance of Confucian culture in the modern environment.In theory,Confucian culture can promote altruism at the level of thinking and feeling and at the level of behavior.In order to verify the influence path,this paper selected the happiness,the orphan adoption rate and percentage of discredited population of enterprise's location as the proxy variable of altruism.The results showed that in the areas with strong modern Confucian culture,the adoption rate of children was higher,the people's life was happier,and the percentage of discredited population was significantly lower,which indirectly verified that Confucian culture was conducive to stimulating the altruistic motivation of enterprises.In reviewing the previous literature on corporate donation,it is found that enterprises,as a complex and huge system,have excavated a variety of other motives by researchers besides altruistic motives.This paper sorts out the political motivation,strategic motivation,self-serving motivation of the management and self-serving motivation of the company,and adopts the method of grouping regression and adding cross product in the test of influence mechanism,reasonably excludes the possibility that Confucian culture influences corporate donation from other motives mentioned above,and strengthens the influence mechanism of altruism of corporate donation.From the perspective of altruism theory,in addition to the influence of culture,the evolution of altruism is very dependent on whether the external environment can effectively punish the non-altruistic behaviors,otherwise the altruists will be over-exploited and lose their evolutionary advantages.In further research,through analysis,this paper concludes that market environment is conducive to the formation of high-density social network,so it has positive effect on protecting altruism and will enhance the influence of Confucian culture on corporate charitable donation behavior.The empirical results also found that the market-oriented environment helps to strengthen the positive impact of modern Confucian culture on corporate charitable donation.The results of this paper are still significant after the robustness test of substitution explanatory variable,substitution dependent variable,substitution marketization degree measurement method and instrumental variable method.In a word,the conscious inheritance and development of Chinese culture is not only our natural mission for the development of the Chinese nation,but also based on the actual needs of contemporary Chinese social construction.Modernization does not mean the abandonment of traditional culture,the two are not completely opposite roles.Finally,this paper calls for us to conscientiously inherit Confucian culture and protect historical relics.The outline of this paper is arranged as follows: the
