A Study Of The Interpretation Of The Keynote Speeches At China International Import Expo From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

With the enhancement of China's national strength,China occupies an increasingly important position on the international stage and its international influence also increases.China is active in various fields such as economy,politics,culture,education,science and technology.Keynote speech makes a major contribution to conveying the idea of the meeting and letting the participants know the topic of the meeting.Interpretation plays a vital role in spreading to other countries the faiths and positions we hold and in forming good international relations with them.Therefore,this thesis chooses the keynote speeches at the first and second China International Import Expos as target text for analysis.China International Import Expo(CIIE)has been successfully held twice since 2018,and its fruitful results are obvious to all.The CIIE is the only state-level national expo with the theme of import in the global expo.Aided by the functional equivalence theory put forward by American linguist Eugene A.Nida,this thesis analyzes the first and second keynote speeches at China International Import Expo.The four equivalences of the functional equivalence theory are lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.In this thesis,the translation methods of literal translation and free translation are analyzed in lexical equivalence.The translation methods of literal translation and combination are analyzed in syntactic equivalence.The translation methods of imitation and paraphrase are analyzed in textual equivalence.The translation methods of variation are analyzed in stylistic equivalence.After the introduction of previous researches of functional equivalence theory and keynote speech,the thesis first analyzes equivalence in the text of Chinese-English interpreting from the perspective of these four equivalences of functional equivalence theory.Then the thesis takes theory as the basis of analysis,analyzing the text byusing the theory of equivalence.Finally the thesis concludes that the translation methods of literal translation,free translation,combination and other methods can be used to achieve the equivalence between the original text and the translated text in the type of keynote speech texts.Although the analysis of the functional equivalence theory in this thesis is only at a very shallow stage,but to a certain extent,it is helpful to further study in the future.
