This is a report on the translation of the first five chapters of the bestseller The Right Time by Danielie Steel,a famous American best-selling author. So far, there has been no Chinese version of this book. The fascinating book, based on the growth of the protagonist,Alex,is full of heartbreak, betrayal, and triumph, which enables modern people to know more about family, love, marriage and other issues. The translator has revised the translation for many times and reflected on the difficulties encountered as well as the corresponding translation skills adopted. After in-depth analysis of the original text, the translator chooses Hans Vermeer's Skopos Theory as the guiding theory for the translation practice.During the process of translation, the translator is not only faithful to the source text, but also tries her best to make the translation consistent with the expression habits of the target receivers, that is,to ensure the readability of the translation to realize the bestseller's commercial value. The report consists of five chapters: task description, process description, theoretical framework, case study and conclusion. In the report, the translator mainly analyzes the translation problems encountered at the lexical level and syntactic level, and addresses them by adopting specific translation skills under the guidance of Skopos Theory. At the lexical level, the translation skills of omission, substitution and conversion are adopted to ensure that the target text is concise, accurate and in line with the norms of Chinese. At the syntactic level, the translation skills of division, inversion and amplification are employed to make the translation complete, logical and coherent. The translation theory selected and the translation skills summarized boast great significance for novel translation.Meanwhile, the translator has accumulated certain translation experience and developed her ability of scientific research. However, there still exist some deficiencies in the report. For one thing, the translation of some sentences is not as natural or coherent as expected, although the translator puts emphasis on the coherence and fluency of the translated text. For another, the translator fails to carry out a thorough analysis of individual cases due to her limited knowledge and translation experience. Therefore, the translator should further improve her professional knowledge as well as language ability to strive for better translation works.
