A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Reservoir Tapes(Excerpts)

Translation of English novels serves as an indispensable part of international exchange and an important way to enrich public culture.The present translation report is based on the translation of some chapters of The Reservoir Tapes(2017),a novel with simple and rational style by British novelist Jon Mc Gregor(1976-).All the case studies in the report are carried out in a theoretical framework with the aim to improve translator’ s skills and theoretical sensitivity.The theory used in the practice is Skopos theory,which defines translation as a purposeful act and was proposed by Hans Vermeer,a German functional linguist.Skopos theory includes Skopos rule,coherence rule,and the fidelity rule.Skopos theory includes Skopos rule,coherence rule,and the fidelity rule.The Skopos rule refers to the fact that translation should be able to function in the context and culture of the target language in the manner expected by the target language recipient;the coherence rule means that the translated text must meet the standard of intra-lingual coherence,and be coherent;the fidelity rule refers to intertextual coherence,which pursues the effect of interlingual coherence between the original and the translation.The coherence and fidelity rules are subordinate to Skopos rule.In this report,the translator cited a number of cases in practice,and proved the guiding significance of Skopos rule.The translation practice shows the guiding role of Skopos theory in the translation of English novels,emphasizes the decisive role of the target language recipients in the translation process,and summarizes the corresponding solutions under the guidance of Skopos theory,which has contributed to translational strategies and provided experience and inspiration for other translators in the field.
