Application Of Reiss' S Text Typology Theory In Translation

This paper is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of A History of London in 100 Places. The 100 places in the source text bear witness to the vicissitudes and glories of London over 2000 years, from Londinium in the Roman Age to a modern international metropolis. Focused on the analysis of chapter 6 to chapter 9, the author discusses the common difficulties with the same type of text as well as possible coping strategies and solutions.The core of the paper involves two parts: pre-translating preparation and case study. On the theoretical basis of Reiss' s Text Typology Theory, the paper illustrates text type, text features and intended function of the target text in great details in the first part.In the chapter of “case study”, by combing difficulties in the process of translation and specific case study, further translation methods and strategies have been summarized from the following perspectives: ? the recognition of proper nouns; ? splitting and restructuring of the complex sentences; ? combination of literal translation and free translation; ? transformation from passive voice to active voice.Through the task description and analysis, a conclusion is drawn in this paper:? Pre-translating preparation is an essential part. It may involve many perspectives, such as the analysis of the type of source text, language features, style and selection of translation theories and strategies;? The lack of common sense of historical cultural background may bring the translators and target text readers trouble in comprehensive understanding, because history-based text contains multiple narrations of historical events and facts under certain cultural background. The translator should not only do extensive research but also add some explanatory notes for target text readers to receive the code effectively;? There is great variation in the way of thinking and expression between English and Chinese. If we realize that, it may help us solve many difficulties we may have in the process of translation practice.
