Wilde was one of the foreign writers first introduced to Chinese people in the initial period of the New Literature Movement. His epistolary prose entitled De Profundis is a long letter Wilde wrote to Douglas in the last few months of his life in prison.Wilde was overwhelmed by mixed love-hatred feelings in this letter.De Profundis is a contradictory, love and hate mixed, painful but light work, which is a wonderful work of Wilde. The study is based on Nida's functional equivalence theory, and the main corpus comes from Oscar Wilde's epistolary prose De Profundis and its Chinese versions translated by Mr.Zhu Chunshen and Mr.Sun Yixue. It will be conducted by comparing the different versions at the lexicons, sentences, discourses and styles to explore how functional equivalence theory will be used in the translation of prose, and study how the two translators choose different translation strategies to ensure the translations achieve the functional equivalence and the target language reader's response is consistent with that of readers of source language.Generally speaking, both of the two versions have achieved the functional equivalence in varied degrees.Zhu's version adopted many four-character formats and traditional Chinese words while Sun's version gave a clear and complete cultural background in his version. However, because of the differences between Chinese and English languages and cultures, the translation is difficult to achieve full equivalence with the source text. The significance of this study is to employ functional equivalence theory to compare and analyze the translation of Oscar Wilde's epistolary prose and verify the feasibility of this theory in the translation of prose. And through the study of Oscar Wilde's last long works,we can have a better understanding of Wilde's views on art and life,so that readers can have a better understanding of Wilde and his works.
