A Practice Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of The Documentary Subtitles Of Chinese Clothing Culture (Excerpt)

Clothing culture is an important part of Chinese culture,which embodies the wisdom and inspiration of the Chinese nation and becomes a distinct national symbol.With the unprecedented vigorous economic and cultural exchanges with foreign countries,it provides an opportunity for the promotion of Chinese culture,and has a positive significance for promoting Chinese clothing culture to the world stage.In this translation practice report,the translator chose the first episode of the documentary “The clothes from the primitive society to the Sui Dynasty” and the second episode “The clothes from the Sui Dynasty to the Song Dynasty”.The selected contents are representative and it has profound impact on clothing and even etiquette system of later generations.This paper is divided into four parts: task description,translation process,case analysis,practice summary.In the process of completing the research task,guided by the Skopos Theory,the translator observes the three rules of the theory,namely the Skopos rule,the fidelity rule and the coherence rule,to address difficulties in the translation.Through the analysis of the source text,the translator employs literal translation,free translation and transliteration with annotation to translate clothing words with cultural Chinese characteristics,while using omission and amplification to translate long and difficult sentences to improve the overall quality of the translation at the same time enhancing the western audience' s awareness of Chinese culture and to achieve the effective external exchange and dissemination of clothing culture.
