As a Chinese classic on clothing culture of minority groups,Chinese Minority Costumes(????)is lexically elegant and sentimental, and full of illustrations of local flavor. The book poses a daunting task to the translator, since it is dominated by a number of culture-loaded expressions and echoes ethnology, aesthetics, dress culture, national history, and literature. To reach functional equivalence between source language and target language, that is,retaining both nationality and readability linguistically and culturally, and to further promote the inclusive national culture, the translator enriches the harmonological translation thought and takes the principle of adaptive selection in practice. The translation of culture-loaded expressions such as “?” “?” “??” “??” “??” “??” “??” “??” “??”,etc.,will be involved in the report.Kasimi and Zgusta categorized culture-loaded expressions into equivalent,semi-equivalent and non-equivalent.The translator concludes a package of means to handle those terms in different cases guided by adaptive selection.Speaking of translation strategies, the translator uses foreignization to translate equivalent expressions, while domestication used to translate semi-equivalent expressions and non-equivalent expressions.Besides literal translation, substitution is applied to translating equivalents, transference and paraphrasing are used for both semi-equivalents and non-equivalents.In addition, the translator needs transliteration and annotation to handle more troublesome non-equivalent expressions. Finally, many other techniques like amplification, omission, illustration, and conversion are used to perfect the work. All in all,the translator intends to achieve the harmony of language and culture via reconciling with herself and with others, rendering the target text understandable with Chinese features. Moreover, the translator hopes to provide references and measures for other scholars to translate clothing texts with Chinese national features, meanwhile, enriching her own knowledge about dress culture for the future translation practice.
