A Report On The E-C Translation Of 26 Marathons (Excerpts)

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the informative text,26 Marathons,which is coauthored by Meb Keflezighi,an American marathon runner,and Scott Douglas.As obviously shown in the title,this book presents 26 marathons Meb had and the key lessons from each race.The first four chapters of the book are chosen to be translated.In the process of translating,the translator finds that there are many postpositional modifiers in different forms in the source text.The postpositional modifier is a very common and distinctive linguistic phenomenon in English,but this form of modifiers is rarely used in modern Chinese,making the translation of postpositional modifiers from English to Chinese difficult.Therefore,this report focuses on the translation of English postpositional modifiers.In the text,there are mainly three forms of postpositional modifiers,namely,prepositional phrases,non-finite clauses,and relative clauses.Nida,a distinguished American translation theorist as well as a linguist,advocates functional equivalence in translation.Guided by Nida‘s Functional Equivalence theory,the translator adopts three main methods,pre-position,division and conversion,to deal with the difficulties of translating postpositional modifiers after conducting a deep analysis on postpositional modifiers in the source text.This report aims to explore practical translation methods of postpositional modifiers in the informative text in the hope of offering practical value of reference for future researchers.
