Over the course of more than 800 years,Oxford University has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents. But the history of Oxford has not been smooth. From the founding of the school to the end of the 16 th century, conflict and cooperation have been running through the two groups of scholars and citizens. This relationship not only affected the development of the two groups, but also had a profound impact on British society. This paper is divided into three chapters, each of which is roughly as follows:Chapter 1: the relationship between the university of Oxford and the city of Oxford from the middle of the 12 th century to the end of the 13 th century.During this period, the relationship between the two was characterized by cooperation and sporadic conflicts, and cooperation was the main factor.By analyzing the privileges of scholars in Oxford University in this period, the bad living style of scholars and the three violent conflicts caused by them, this paper explores the influence of the relationship between the city and the university in this period on both sides. On the one hand, the university acquired some privileges and developed steadily. On the other hand, the establishment of the university promoted the development of urban leasing industry and service industry.Chapter two: the relationship between the university of Oxford and the city of Oxford from the 14 th century to the end of the 15 th century.During this period, the relationship between the two was mainly characterized by intensified conflicts, but there was still cooperation between them.In the first half of the 14 th century, the king granted economic privileges to universities as well as urban environmental management privileges, which led to the conflict of st.Nicholas day in 1355.The clash was the biggest in the university's history. As a result of this conflict, universities have gained more privileges, resulting in many conflicts of interest between citizens and scholars in economic and environmental management.During this period, the influence of the relationship was reflected in the further acquisition of privileges by universities, the accumulation of wealth and the improvement of livingenvironment for scholars, while the cities lost more autonomy. In addition, the development of the university objectively promotes the further development of the urban economy and the improvement of the urban environment.Chapter three: mainly expounds the relationship between universities and cities in the 16 th century.During this period, the privileges of the university were curtailed by the growth of the civil class, the invalid exercise of the Wolsey' Charter, and Cromwellan's reform. The contraction of university privileges and the establishment of a permanent institution to handle the relationship between the city and the university have led to the relaxation of the relationship between the university and the city. This change in the relationship has made the university and the city of Oxford an interdependent whole.
