The work,Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu, gives a comprehensive introduction to some streets and alleys in Chengdu that had existed before the founding of the People's Republic of China. With the internationalization of Chengdu, translating Chengdu culture has become an inevitable trend, which can effectively promote the external communication of Chengdu culture, thereby enhancing Chengdu's international status and promoting Chengdu's current development. The source text of the translation discussed in this report comes from the Part 2,Chapter 4 ofRecords of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu, which mainly contains the introduction of four streets. This part involves many culture-loaded contents. The translator needs to add necessary supplement, introduction and explanation based on the source text to help the readers understand. Therefore,in addition to describing the basic situation of the translation project, recording the translation process, and introducing the theoretical framework, this report mainly focuses on analyzing specific examples of how the translator solves translation problems under the guidance of Appiah's Thick Translation theory in the translation process. There are four main types of Thick Translation forms discussed in the report: “translator's introduction before the text”,“additions inside the text”,“footnotes outside the text” and “supplementary maps after the text”.The report concludes that, through Thick Translation, the translator can provide the target readers with a rich linguistic and cultural context related to the source text,so as to help them better understand and appreciate the culture of streets and alleys in Chengdu. Therefore,Thick Translation theory has certain pertinence and applicability for the translation of cultural texts, which can effectively solve the translation problems of culture-loaded contents, and can help to preserve the cultural characteristics of the source text to the maximum extent.Besides, forms to achieve Thick Translation effect are various and flexible, translators should not rigidly adhere to one single form or some inherent forms, they can apply suitable ones according to the specific translation object.
