Reading teaching is a main constituent of English teaching in Junior high school.Cultivating students' reading ability plays an important role in the development of students' language ability and the formation of the English core competencies.According to The Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2017),it is vital to cultivate students' English core competencies through the study of English subject.However,English reading has always been an obstacle for Chinese students.According to related studies in and out nation,the integration of English core competencies into classroom activities is more conducive to students' language learning.Based on the present situation,a survey research on English reading teaching effects in junior high schools under the guidance of English core competencies was conducted.This paper is based on the classroom observation,questionnaire survey method,supplemented by individual interviews and tests.The research questions are as follows: 1.How do teachers carry out the English core competencies in reading teaching? 2.Based on the requirements of English core competencies,what are the problems existing in present English reading teaching in the junior high school? 3.What is the effect of English reading teaching in junior high school under the guidance of English core competencies?Based on the above questions,283 students and six teachers from three junior high schools in Dengfeng City were investigated.The data was analyzed by SPSS,using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research.The conclusion was drawn from the analysis of the valid data collected.First,in reading class,teachers pay attention to the learning of language knowledge and cultivate students' language ability.But little attention has been paid to the learning ability,cultural awareness and thinking quality advocated by the core quality of English discipline.Second,there are many problems existing in present English reading teaching in junior high schools.Some teachers have inadequate understanding of English core competencies.And because of the pressure of examination,many teachers pay more attention to the basic knowledge,ignoring the cultivation of students' ability development.Third,the effect of English reading teaching is not optimistic.Students' discourse knowledge,cultural awareness,logical ability and critical spirit are still at a low level.
