A Study On English Reading Teaching Strategies Based On English Subject Core Competencies In Junior High School

Teaching strategy is an organic part of teaching design.It refers to the teaching behavior or teaching activities cater to the students' learning needs in order to reach the teaching goal in a specific teaching situation.As the core competencies continue to penetrate,Subject Core Competencies and its cultivation have become the focus of academic research.And English Subject Core Competencies can be cultivated through the implementation of English curriculum.Therefore,the application of English teaching strategy will directly affect the completion of teaching objectives,and thus directly affect the cultivation of English Subject Core Competencies.Based on the theory of English Subject Core Competencies,this thesis applies case analysis,classroom observation and interview to study how to make better use of English teaching strategies in terms of the cultivation of English Subject Core Competencies in English reading teaching.We proposed four frequently used teaching strategies through the analysis of collected 12 reading teaching designs.And based on English Subject Core Competencies Indicator System of Junior High,we further counted the strategies which is related to the 11 elements of ESCC accordingly with 12 classroom observation.With an interview of the observed English teachers,more detailed information of problems with current English reading teaching strategies in junior high is obtained.This paper studies the problems and attributes the causes as follows: the influence of exam-oriented education and traditional teaching pattern;the insufficient understanding of the teaching materials and students;teachers do not attach importance to the influence of teaching strategies.In view of the above problems and causes,we provide some holistic and specific improvement suggestions.As far as the holistic strategy is concerned,teachers should adhere to the theory of effective teaching strategies and actively participate in the related training of teachers' professional development,and adhere to the concept of cultivating students' core competencies.Specifically,we provide some suggestions for the four teaching strategies.As for questioning strategy,more open questions should be raised to stimulate students' thinking.Speaking of cooperation strategy,teachers should know the objective of group work clearly and assign the task properly.For practice guiding strategy,an authentic language environment should be provided to students and students' diversity should be considered.When it comes with assessment strategy,teachers should be aware of the important status of formative assessment and considers it as a primary means for promoting students' development.The purpose of this study is to provide some references for junior high school English teachers to apply effective English teaching strategies based on English Subject Core Competencies.Moreover,some limitations is presented possibly for further studies.
